ABSTRACT



             The present thesis exarnines the activities of the Turkish Orthodox
          Patriarchy beginning frorn its rise to the present day and coinprises four
          chapters with an introduction. in lntroduction, brief inforrnation about
          the reason why this subject was preferred far thesis as well as its lirni­
          tations, sources and rnethodology pursued is given. The introductory
          section alsa accounts the spread of Christianity arnong the Turks and of
          those  who  converted  into  Christianity.  This  is  followed  by  a  brief
          account of settlernents of Turkish dans in Anatolia.
             in  the  first  chapter,  this  study  prirnarily  deals  with  the Turkish
          Orthodoxies during the lndependence War of Turkey. it alsa evaluates
          the  issue  of the  Christian  population  in Anatolia,  Greek  Orthodox
          Patriarchy of Fener and its political activates at that time, the Christian
          groups opposed Greek occupation and the political activities of Fener
          Patriarchy,  the  activities  of  Papa  Eftırn,  and  the  establishrnent  of
          Turkish Orthodox Patriarchy.
             The second chapter focuses upon the state of Turkish Orthodoxies
          aft er the proclarnation  of the  Republic  of Turkey. Within  this frarne­
          work, it discuses the struggle between Papa Eftırn and Fener Patriarchy,
          the initiatives of the Fener to ensure a dialogue with the govemrnent,
          appointrnent of Eftım as Acting Patriarch as well as his disrnission, tak­
          ing the Patriarchy in Kayseri into lstanbul. Besides this, it alsa exarn­
          ines the years in which the exchange of population with Greece took
          place; the Patriarchy lost its congregation, its relation with the Turkish
          govemments and struggles with the Fener Patriarchy.
              in the third chapter, the Turkish Orthodox  Patriarchy's main  the
          places of worship, the issue of the Church  Boards and the worship in
          Church are tackled.
